Since I have known about my acceptance into NYU I haven't been on top of keeping up with TKFV as much as I used to, so I want to apologize for that. Things have been very very very hectic lately in terms of getting things off and running the minute I hit the city next year so it has brought me away from here for a bit. So in the meantime I am going to try as hard as I can to continue to post on this blog because I know you frequent readers are probably wondering where everything went!
To start here's a few pictures of my new favorite model, Alysha Nett. She has one of the dopest looks I have ever seen... Plus I love girls with tattoos. Check them out below:
Yes, I know it's been weeks and I've been promising this post, but things have been so hectic lately that I haven't been able to get to it until now. This is Ditto's trip to Los Angeles featuring our homies in OFWGKTA and the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards.
To start, Alan South and I got into Los Angeles on Friday, February 11th and of course had to make the first stop at the famous In & Out right by the airport. For those of you who don't know In & Out... I'm really really sorry, but it is the best thing to hit the United States. This trip was Alan's first time out west so it was also his first time to an In & Out. The reaction was priceless. Check it out below:
After In & Out we retreated to our hotel where we hung out for awhile before figuring out our plans. Within an hour or so we went to Taco from OFWGKTA's house, which is also the location where all the OF rap albums and mixtapes have been recorded. When we got there I was introduced to Syd (also Taco's sister), Mike G, and the homie Toony TuneS, which was funny because neither of us realized who each other were until afterwards haha. Alan South, Taco, and myself had a long conversation about what seemed like everything from us, to OF, to girls, to music, and life in general. That whole conversation and atmosphere to begin with at the studio made me realize how smart and put together OF is about everything they do. Below is a little video of the recording booth where all the OF albums were made. It's a little hard to understand what's going on in the video, but Taco is explaining all the graffiti on the wall from meanings, to when they were drawn, etc. Check it out below:
After Taco's Alan and I went to meet up with our homie Anwar, who is also the manager of Casey Veggies. Some of you may recognize the name Anwar from Tyler's recent song Yonker's where he says,
"Rappin' as I'm mockin' deaf rock stars
Wearin' synthetic wigs made of Anwar's dreadlocks"
He invited us to a Stone Throws event on Hollywood Boulevard at this store called Freak City, but by the time we got there it was already pretty late so we didn't stay for too long. The scene was pretty cool though and there was a good amount of people even at the time we arrived.
From there we went back to the hotel to start over.
Saturday
On Saturday, Taco invited us to hang out at their normal spot where Gray and I met them last year. Pretty much all of the artists from OFWGKTA were there except for Hodgy Beats (who I met quickly last year at the Diddy Riese event with Johnny Cupcakes), Syd, Mike G, and Frank Ocean. I did get to see Tyler, The Creator again though and shot a quick video of him, which you can check out below:
Unlike what many people might think about OFWGKTA and their personalities, these kids are some of the funniest people I have ever hung out with in my life. I don't think I went a moment without laughing the whole time I was there because something funny was always being said or happening.
As the day went on though, Alan and I met up with my good friend Aaron Rovner who is a student at USC. We spent the rest of the night with him going to some USC parties and just catching up. Rovner was the lead trumpet player in my Jazz Band two years ago when he was a senior and I was a sophomore. I saw him last year in February as well during Gray and I's trip to LA. This time around though there was definitely a lot more going on and Alan and I returned back to our hotel tired and ready to start the next day... Grammy day.
Sunday
53rd Annual Grammy Awards Ticket
On Sunday, Alan and I spent the beginning of the day getting ready for the Grammy Awards, which my very good friend Mei Mei Zeprun invited us out to. We arrived at the Staples Center and the day really began.
Staples Center
Our first stop was the red carpet, which unfortunately I did not snap any pictures while I was on it, but Alan, Mei Mei, and I were able to walk with some of the worlds biggest stars. After the carpet we went inside, where the show began.
Inside the Staples Center
There's not much there is to say about the Grammys because I'm guessing many of you watched them on TV at home. The show is pretty much the same, of course, besides the awkward commercial breaks in the middle where they countdown warning everyone that the show is about to go live and everyone needs to get back to their seats. Also if you're sitting close enough that you're on TV they send in extras to fill your seats so that the crowd doesn't look empty when you get up to go somewhere. Below are some videos shot by Mei Mei Zeprun on her iPhone below though. Check them all out:
This was the opening
Rihanna & Eminem performing "Love the Way You Lie"
Katy Perry performing "Teenage Dream"
Dr. Dre & Eminem performing "I Need A Doctor"
Drake & Rihanna performing "What's My Name"
Me, Mei Mei Zeprun, & Alan South
Ditto
And that's pretty much Ditto's trip to Los Angeles back in February. Yes, once again I know a long time ago, but I finally put the post up for everyone to read here at TKFV.
Huge thanks to Mei Mei Zeprun for making this trip possible in the first place and also a shout out to the homies in OFWGKTA for letting us kick it with them again.
So, it's my birthday today and I couldn't be any happier right now! Carmelo and Chauncey to the Knicks, I'm in Spain, and I have the best friends and family in the world! And I mean that, without any of you guys these 18 years would never have been the same. Much love to my mom and dad, much love to all my friends, much love to all the readers here on TKFV, and much love to the other kid from Vermont, Gray! Hope everyone's day turns out to be a great one! SWAG.
Right now I'm writing this in the Philadelphia airport waiting to board my flight to Spain! Till March 5th I'll be heading to Madrid for a few days and then spending the rest of the trip in Salamanca with my good friend Manu. This is my first time to Spain and at the moment my Spanish is horrible so I guess we'll see how it goes. I'll be celebrating my 18th birthday over seas though and having the time of my life, but I'll try to keep everyone as updated as possible on how my trip is going over here!
Madrid
In the meantime I'll be putting up a post about Los Angeles and the Grammys very soon!
I think I'm going to start doing some posts like this. We post a lot of things about other people, but not enough about us. So it's time for all of you to get to see some of Gray and myself outside of the blog. Just a day in the life.
Below is a picture taken by Rikki Lee Thiel of myself and the big homie/second father Luis Calderin, owner of OKAY!! OKAY!! (http://okay-okay.com). This was a little get together right before my Winter Break started. Got to always kick it with the older homies every now and then.
Luis Calderin & David
For those that may remember we've done a lot of projects with OKAY!! OKAY!! from the Burton US Open, Burton summer sales, concerts, and anything we can work on together. They helped us on our big TKFV vs. LA video that essentially started this blog too.
P.S. Shouts to Burton for hooking up the jacket I'm wearing in this picture.
Our homie Mustafa Abubaker, a 17 year old senior at Woodward Academy in Atlanta, shot us an email the other day about his first novel, The Surrogate. Of course Gray and myself were interested the first minute we opened up the email and began reading it because we are huge supporters of young people like us chasing their dreams and making them into realities. Young musicians, directors, and in this case young authors have TKFV's support and attention 100%. Check out Mustafa's biography below:
Biography:
Mustafa Abubaker penned a 108 page novel, The Surrogate, dealing with the coming-of-age of an unknowingly adopted child through the eyes of his father. Despite abundant loss, the characters exemplify perseverance, providing a very realistic approach to many of life's obstacles. Mustafa is currently hard at work promoting his novel and has his eyes set on a future that heavily involves writing.
This Saturday night at Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vermont DJ Cody Rice, Vakkuum, DJ D-Cutz, and myself (DJ D-Kid) will be performing! This is the fourth event thrown at Higher Ground after three sold out events before it. So if you haven't yet already get your tickets! $15 before and $18 day of. Lets fill this place up and swag it out! Yerr.
Kyle Thompson (also known as Fattie B.) of Burlington, Vermont has been a DJ, MC, and visual artist for a decade and a half, and has also been one of the biggest role models for Gray and myself as young kids growing up in Vermont. He is one of the most recognizable characters for talent in Vermont today and will always be seen in my eyes as one of the most amazing people I have ever met in the art and music world.
Bio:
While locking down a regular DJ slot on 90.1 FM (WRUV) radio and attending Champlain College in 1993 under the pseudonym Fattie Bumballattie, Thompson joined the acid-jazz/soul/funk group BELIZBEHA as the lone MC. The seven-piece collective (which featured 2 female vocalists and a full rhythm section) spent the next 7 years touring, performing an average of 200 shows per year. BELIZBEHA toured across the continental US 15 times as well as extended trips to Canada and Germany. During this time, BELIZBEHA sold more than 30,000 independent copies of Charlie's Dream (their debut CD) and Void Where Inhibited (their second disc) combined. BELIZBEHA was the first unsigned band to work with publicists Susan Blonde Agency, whose clients at the time included Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, BELIZBEHA was touted as “the next sure thing” by Billboard magazine in 1998 and appeared on Canada’s Breakfast TV two times that same year. In 1999, on the verge of a major label deal, the band disbanded due to inner relationship disagreements.
Following the end of the touring grind, Fattie landed a weekly weekend spot on the AAA radio station 96.7 FM (WPLS) called The Groovebox (along with fellow Burlington DJ Craig Mitchell). At the same time, Fattie released the first in a collection of independent compilations on his own Fattie B. Records entitled HOP, which showcased the finest downtempo, acid-jazz, hip-hop and soul from artists in and around the northeast U.S. Between 1999 and 2004, he released six subsequent volumes of the HOP series. 100% of the proceeds from the sales of these discs went directly to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
In April of 1999, Fattie began to DJ a weekly club dance party showcasing 70’s & 80’s hits entitled RETRONOME at Club Metronome. It quickly became the area’s most successful residence. Fattie is still at the helm of RETRONOME to this day.
In 2002, Fattie opened a small clothing boutique on Main Street in Burlington called STEEZ. He and his partner, Jordan Boyea, sold lines such as LRG, Mixwell, Xlarge, The Hundreds, Leroy Jenkins and Lemar & Dauley. STEEZ also sold canvases and clothing featuring the iconic artwork of Fattie (work inspired equally by Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and hip-hop’s golden age).
In 2003, STEEZ moved from its smaller Main Street location to a larger, more visible space on the Church Street marketplace at 104 Church Street (2nd Floor). The expanded store now carries lines such as: Akomplice, 10Deep, Crooks & Castles, Black Scale and CTRL (among others). Fatties’ bold hip-hop and DJ inspired art can also be purchased as paintings, prints, posters as well as clothing. His posters and prints are distributed worldwide to thousands of retailers through Culturenik (www.culturenik.com), including: Target, Blockbuster, Urban Outfitters and Beyond The Wall. Fattie also currently has an on-going acrylic painting showing at Jan Larsen Gallery in Brooklyn, NY (www.janlarsenart.com). Visit his web site at www.steezshop.com for examples of his work.
In 2005, Fattie produced and released Burlington’s Un-Scene, a collaborative compilation with local record store L-Burners that featured the best of the areas hip-hop MCs and DJs. He also returned to the microphone to lead seminal hip-hop groups Eye Oh You and Three the Hard Way (with DJ A-Dog) to extremely successful runs. Fattie also released Greetings From Vermont: An Introduction To Burlington’s MCs and Djs in 2007 - another showcase of local hip-hop talent.
The list of major acts that Fattie has shared the stage with is impressive. Through his BELIZBEHA, Eye Oh You, Three the Hard Way, and DJ gigs, he has performed with these talents:
The Roots, Kool & The Gang, A Tribe Called Quest, Maceo Parker, Black Eyed Peas, Morris Day & The Time, Busta Rhymes, The Wailers, KRS-One, Ben Harper, Slick Rick, Africa Bambaata, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Pharcyde, Michael Franti, Talib Kweli, Gil Scott Herron, Jurassic 5, Sugarhill Gang, Ziggy Marley, Digital Underground, Common, US3, Redman, Big Daddy Kane, Grey Boy All-Stars, Guru, GZA, Brand Nubian, Groove Collective, Soulive, MOE, G-Love & Special Sauce, Smif N Wesson, Jon Fishman (of Phish), Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Schoolly D, C Rayz Walz, Mike G (of The Jungle Brothers), Oteil Burbridge, Ledisi, J-Live, String Cheese Incident, Disco Biscuits, Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Samples, Strangefolk and DJ Rob Swift, Revolution and Questlove.
Locally, Fattie can currently be found locking it down at four different weekly gigs where he spins everything from hip-hop & soul to 80’s & old school.
You can get in contact with Fattie by E-mailing him at fattiebee@hotmail.com or calling him at (802) 238-2460 Read more...
Chris Habana Chains On My Neck (Will to the Right)
Just got these chains in the mail today. Wanted to give the company a little shout out because everyone I've seen today so far loves them and so do I. Over here at TKFV both Gray and myself are big fans of Good Wood necklaces, but I think I found a new favorite of mine. The pieces run a little pricey compared to Good Wood chains, but they're all a good buy. To buy necklaces, earings, hats, and other accessories visit Chris Habana's website here.
Last Thursday night, 8/19, at Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vermont, myself, DJ D-Cutz, Vakkuum, & DJ Cody Rice sold out another successful show. This show was so much different than the others though. For the first time the response from the crowd was so on point. For a show originally meant for people dancing and having fun lead to girls grabbing onto our legs and screaming our names. The first couple rows were just watching us. I can tell you after that DJ D-Cutz and myself will stop at nothing this year to keep advancing.
Special thanks to Mark Mallory & Eric Dubuque for putting on another great show, DJ Cody Rice & Vakkuum for supplying more dope music, our favorite photographer Sarah Kjelleren for taking photos, and of course my homie Gray for taking some video footage of the show.
Part of the reason why there hasn't been many posts on TKFV lately is because of our show, Summer Heat 2, at Higher Ground tonight in South Burlington, Vermont. From the same dudes who put on the most successful raves in Higher Ground history, Rave-a-Palooza and Summer Heat, we're excited to perform again tonight with DJ Cody Rice and Vakkuum. About to be another good night. This is what we do! Hope everyone comes out and has a good time! See all you Vermonters at Higher Ground tonight.
Two Kids From Vermont
Shout out to AllenMichael Robertson, Jean-Noel, & DJ Sum1 for helping get ready for this day.
And a special thanks to Mark Mallory and Brad Cole for putting on another show.
Signif is our first female rapper introduced on TKFV, and we're glad it's her. One thing we concentrate heavily on with rappers we introduce on here is lyricism. And Signif sure has plenty of that. Check out her bio, music video for her song, "Unleashed," and download her first full length album entitled, The Transition, below:
Biography:
Signif or Significant, born and raised in Milwaukee was first put on to Hip Hop by her older brothers and started doing poetry at the age of 8. Poetry eventually turned into freestyle, and then into song writing as a result of her love for music. Her style can be described as just that, her, it's how she lives and breaths. Signif is one of a new breed of artists that would be classified as "Reality Rap" in that her writing direction doesn't depend on the latest trend, but rather what she feels, or whatever the track brings out at that moment. With a versatile flow that ranges from intense to laid back, Signif uses her words to paint vivid images of the world through her eyes. Signif is a complex artist with a simple message which is, "it's OKAY to be you." We live in a time with a lot of fads and modern day aristocracies and people desperately seeking approval. She just want to remind everyone out there that "it's OK to be yourself."
Usually I am a fan of Khalifa's videos, and this is no exception. Never Been, off his mixtape Kush & Orange Juice, was definitally one of my favorites off that mix. Laid back beat with classic Wiz flow... you can't really go wrong there. This vid was directed by Bill Paladino, who has been doing some other work with Khalifa as well. Lots of trees, liquor, and strippers... but what else would you expect from this duo? Check out the video below!
This is one thing I've failed to do, which is write about where I'm going so nobody thinks I'm just ditching the blog for awhile. For the next couple of days (tonight-Saturday) I'll be in Nantucket baking in the sun, swimming in the water, checking out fine women, and drinking Nantucket Nectars (Orange Mango FTW). So yerr, might not be on here too much but I'll try! So if I'm not I hope everyones week is just as great! Peace to VT.
This was a series I'm grabbing off of when our good friend, Frendy Lemorin, ran his blog named, *General-Made. So here it is on TKFV. For week one here's Guido Threat:
Above is the official video of David (DJ D-Kid) and DJ D-Cutz' last concert Summer Heat, which took place last Tuesday (6/22) at Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vermont. It was another sold out crowd and successful show - straight CRAZY! This wasn't my first rave that I filmed, but definitely my favorite. The crowd was wild, energy was high, and everything was going as planned. The video shows how sick it was so get to watching!!!!
David Update: This is just a little something I do besides keeping up with TKFV with Gray. On here I'm David, but on stage I'm DJ D-Kid. Hope everyone checks it out and enjoys!
